Working the Clock: Integrating Temporal Expression into Serial Homicide Analysis with VORTEX
摘要
Time has traditionally been treated as a definitional yet underexplored feature of serial homicide. This chapter discusses the importance of treating inter-crime intervals not as passive gaps but as an expressive behavioral dimension, on par with victimology, geography, and crime scene behavior. We propose a multidimensional framework that integrates what research has shown about patterns of behavioral consistency and introduce VORTEX, Victimology, Offender behavioral progression, Region, Temporal EXpression, a conceptual model that places time as a co-equal, within-series axis. By reframing timing as Temporal Expression (TEX) and situating it alongside who is targeted (V), how the interaction is enacted (O), and where opportunity is structured (R), the chapter aims to sharpen theoretical accounts of serial offending and to support more disciplined, practice-relevant analysis.
