Agricultural Development Paradigm Shift in Indonesia: Promoting Farmer Corporations for Sustainability
摘要
The agricultural sector is experiencing a significant transformation, prompting a shift from traditional development paradigms towards more sustainable and inclusive models. This chapter examines the establishment of farmer corporations through an agribusiness approach as a strategy to enhance agricultural sustainability. By organizing farmers into corporate structures, collective access to resources, knowledge and markets can be strengthened, improving productivity and profitability. Using the Context-Input-Process-Product (CIPP) framework, the chapter examines the key challenges faced by smallholder farmers. One of them is limited access to markets, financing and technology, factors that often lead to unsustainable practices. The agribusiness approach emphasizes the importance of value-added activities, such as processing and marketing, enabling farmers to increase their competitiveness while preserving local identity. The chapter also examines the crucial role of policy support, institutional frameworks and capacity building in fostering the growth of farmer corporations. Training in business management, financial literacy and sustainable practices is crucial for empowering farmers during this transition. Drawing on case studies from various regions, the chapter highlights successful models of farmer corporations that have effectively adopted agribusiness strategies to achieve greater sustainability and resilience. Ultimately, this chapter offers insights and practical recommendations for policymakers, practitioners and researchers on promoting equitable and sustainable agricultural development through the integration of farmer corporations and agribusiness.
