Antagonisms and Discourses on “Europe” in the Turkish Political Landscape: Yet Another Archetype of Anti-Westernism or Resilience?
摘要
This article aims to explore the discourses on “Europe” in Turkish politics in the period following the 1999 Helsinki decision, parallel to both national and international political developments within the broader context of Turkey’s quest for Westernization from a poststructuralist perspective. The point of departure of the study is the claim that “Europe” is not just a geographical entity or a political union but a discourse, the meaning of which changes depending on who is speaking and the historical context. In this respect, the main argument of the article is that until 2005, “Europe” was the central axis of antagonism in Turkish politics where political identities were defined by their positions vis-à-vis “Europe,” whereas after 2005, the “European” discourse lost its power to define the political battlefield, replaced by other domestic or regional identities.
