Kurdish Nationalism and the West: Expectations, Dashed Hopes, and Resentment
摘要
Historically, from the Ottoman period onward, the issue of minorities has shaped relations with Western powers, with minority groups often suspected of acting in concert with the West against Türkiye’s territorial integrity. As with other ethnic groups, perceptions of the Kurdish issue have contributed to the formation of anti-Western attitudes in Türkiye. However, contrary to widespread beliefs in public opinion and policy circles, it is difficult to argue that Western powers have—if ever—supported Kurdish aspirations for statehood. Most importantly, Western states and institutions have not pursued a single, unified, or consistent policy toward the Kurds in Türkiye. This chapter critically reassesses the prevalent perception on the Kurds in Türkiye by examining the Kurds’ historical experiences with Western states and their perceptions of Western powers.
