Conclusions
摘要
The concluding chapter synthesises the book’s key findings and situates them within broader debates on political geography and cleavage politics. It highlights three main lessons: (1) metropolitan polarisation of attitudes and votes is a general trend, though not a linear one and not uniform across cities; (2) suburban areas have shifted from favouring conservative parties to also becoming strongholds of radical right populism; and (3) contextual factors within metropolises exert powerful but uneven effects on voting behaviour. Finally, the chapter reflects on the study’s limitations and future research avenues, including comparative extensions beyond Europe and the investigation of additional mechanisms through mixed methods or original geolocated surveys. By unveiling the metropolitan dimension of the new globalisation-related cultural conflict, the book contributes to scientists’, pundits’, and policymakers’ understanding of how the consequences of globalisation for political competition manifest at the fine-grained metropolitan scale.
