This case study outlines an ongoing collaboration between an academic philosopher and senior figures in the UK construction engineering sector. The aim of the project is to use philosophical concepts and tools to understand and improve construction and engineering practice. The work arose in response to widespread concerns in the industry about quality, safety, and professional responsibility in the light of a number of recent, high-profile construction failures in the UK. The project collaborators believe these failures aren’t fully explained by cost pressures or isolated technical mistakes but instead reflect deeper epistemic, normative, and conceptual issues within engineering practice, regulation, and governance. The case study details how the project arose, why it is unusual, what work has been done to date, and where the project is headed. It offers an exploratory map of underexamined philosophical issues in construction engineering and outlines a blueprint for future work focused on improving the safety, quality, and durability of the built environment.

摘要
