In the Beginning: A Brief History of the Study of Religion and Politics in the American Context
摘要
This chapter provides a brief history of the empirical study of religion and politics within the American context. It first notes several prevailing theoretical frameworks in the aftermath of World War II that served to downplay the importance of studying religion in shaping political attitudes and behavior. It then examines those elements that led to the formation of the Religion and Politics Section within the American Political Science Association along with those factors and endeavors that have subsequently served to sustain scholarly engagement in the study of religion and politics. Finally, the chapter identifies certain matters within the American context that challenge the sustainability of such study as a scholarly endeavor of theoretical importance.
