Treatment of Osteoporotic Fractures
摘要
Due to demographic trends, osteoporotic fractures will become an increasing medical and socio-economic burden in traumatology in future decades. Every third 50-year old woman and every fifth 50-year old man will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. Elderly persons needing nursing care carry a high fracture risk. Fragility fractures usually result from inadequate trauma (“low trauma fracture”) or occur spontaneously, like in osteoporotic vertebral body or sacrum fractures. Studies have shown that over 80% of fractures requiring surgery in patients over 60 years of age are associated with reduced bone density.
