AI Technologies for Inclusive Smart Cities: Safeguarding Elderly and Disabled Citizens

This article examines the role of AI and digital technologies in promoting inclusive Smart Cities, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding the rights and accessibility of elderly and disabled individuals. It examines the legal and ethical challenges posed by technological advancements, such as algorithmic discrimination and the digital divide, which can exacerbate social inequalities. The authors highlight key European and Italian regulations, including the AI Act and the Web Accessibility Directive, aimed at ensuring accessibility and non-discrimination. The study underscores the importance of balancing innovation with fundamental rights, advocating for universal design and digital literacy to empower vulnerable groups. By analysing case studies and legislative frameworks, the article proposes strategies to integrate technology into urban planning while safeguarding inclusivity and human dignity.
