Functional Outcomes After Diverticulitis Surgery
摘要
The number of patients presenting to the Emergency Room with an acute episode of diverticulitis is increasing, and while elective colonic resection was previously recommended to prevent emergency surgery, current guidelines emphasize prioritizing patient quality of life (QoL) before undergoing an operation. This chapter reviews the existing literature on bowel, genitourinary, and sexual function following elective resection for diverticulitis. In addition, this chapter identifies patient populations that may benefit symptomatically after elective resection, the technical factors of surgery that can be used to improve patient outcomes, as well as long-term outcomes (beyond 5 years). This chapter, therefore, aims to provide a better understanding of how QoL after surgery for diverticulitis can be considered in an individualized approach to improve patient outcomes.
