This chapter examines tensions, challenges, and opportunities in NPS volunteer management, staff-volunteer relations, and strategies to reduce, mitigate, or manage perceived or actual dependence on volunteers in parks. Two approaches to managing volunteers are introduced, based on practices identified through interviews and observation: Volunteer-Staff Strategic Separation (VS3) and Volunteer-Ranger Reciprocal Relationships (VR3). Issues and questions pertaining to volunteer recruitment, supervision, and recognition are identified. Words of rangers and volunteers are incorporated throughout.
