Insights into the Other as a Stranger: A Case for Transcendence
摘要
Relational philosophy has led humanity to an awareness of itself as a relational being that comes to such a conclusion through encounters that are mediated through difference. Thus, every encounter with the other is an instantiation of difference. In our social contexts, the other who is different tends to be labeled as a stranger. But what does a stranger mean? It is both a label intended to bridge difference and to reduce the other to a known being that can be controlled or predicted. However, the word itself offers the possibility of escape for the other and an instantiation of their transcendence. This chapter attempts to demonstrate how the other, as stranger, defines the human condition as a being oriented toward transcendence.
