This chapter argues that higher educationhigher education as configured under neoliberalismneoliberalism is a failure—and on the brink of extinctionextinction. But before it dies, it aims to take down as many of the components that contribute to the pursuit of democraticdemocracy educationdemocratic education and critical citizenshipcritical citizenship as possible. These components not only include tenuretenure, academic freedomacademic freedom, and the pursuit of knowledge, but also the values necessary for justice and democracydemocracy to flourish in the new millennium, namely diversity, equity, and inclusionDEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). It maintains that academic life during the twilight of capitalismcapitalism requires that we take stock of the ugly consequences of utilizing the market as the sole barometer of academic value—and ask what they mean for the critical future of higher education.
