How Political Discourse on Immigration Changes in Platformed Environments
摘要
This chapter introduces the main thesis of the book by examining how political discourse on immigration is transformed within platformed environments dominated by social media. Moving beyond actor-centred and media-centric approaches, the chapter argues that digital platforms actively structure the conditions under which immigration becomes visible and politically meaningful. Within this framework, immigration is progressively reconfigured as a strategic communicative resource, embedded in antagonistic, polarised, and emotionally charged discourses. The chapter advances the book’s core thesis: a shift from the representation of migrants as primary “Others” toward forms of alternative otherness, in which political opponents become central targets of exclusion and delegitimisation. This transformation is analysed through the lens of Social Media–Critical Discourse Studies, grounding the study in the Italian context.
