Based on a large valence resource where verbs are systematically aligned with meanings and sets of valence frames associated with each verb, we explore whether one can find overall tendencies pertaining to which types of valence specifications relate to which types of meaning. We discuss examples of possible correlations, stated in descriptive, linguistic terms using the main units and principles of organization of the resource. The resource is a system NorVal-1952 of Norwegian Hellan [1], a subpart of the valence lexicon NorVal (Hellan [2]; Hellan [3]) where a system of ‘semantic meta-features’ has been added to 1952 verb lexemes (For NorVal-1952, cf. (Hellan L [4]), and for NorVal, cf. (Hellan L [5]; Hellan L [6]). An English counterpart to NorVal-1952 has recently also been built, so that the investigations and their outcomes can possibly be replicated for English, and in turn for other languages.

Correlations Between Verb Meaning and Verb Valence

摘要
