Conclusions
摘要
This concluding chapter synthesizes the book’s central argument: culture is not merely an accessory to sustainability but a constitutive dimension alongside social, economic, and environmental factors. Historically, culture has been treated as a peripheral concern in development discourse; however, the contributions in this volume demonstrate that it serves as the interpretive framework through which communities understand their environment and negotiate social relations. The editors highlight the tension between the need for metrics in funding decisions and the intangible nature of cultural value, arguing against the tokenism of culture in sustainable development. The text identifies persistent questions for future research, particularly regarding how to protect diversity in an interconnected digital world and ensuring that participatory processes are scalable. It calls for a departure from disciplinary isolation, urging partnerships that link cultural actors with environmental and technological sectors. Concluding that the journey of sustainability is ongoing, the authors present culture as both the compass and the terrain for future action. This work ultimately challenges practitioners and policymakers to view their efforts not just as technical adjustments, but as part of a broader cultural project essential for the survival of shared values and identities. Ultimately, the editors argue that environmental stewardship and economic equity cannot succeed without the meaningful narratives that culture provides. This section advocates for the integration of cultural sustainability into policy agendas, requiring interdisciplinary collaboration and a reimagining of sustainability as a fundamentally cultural project.
