Dyeing of Natural Fibers with Extracts from Wood—A Strategy for Fully Bio-Based and Sustainable Textiles
摘要
A strategy for realization of fully bio-based and sustainable textiles has to consider additionally to the natural fiber materials as well the used dye stuffs and finishing agents. According to this statement, the actual study report on the use of logwood extracts for the dyeing of fabrics made from natural fibers as cotton and wool. The logwood is from renewable resources. Practical applications are done in pre-mordanting and meta-mordanting processes using only iron(II)sulphate as mordanting agent. Iron mordant agent is chosen for environmental reasons. Depending on the type of mordanting process, concentration of dye and mordant, intensive colorations in the range of black, grey, blue-greyish and red-brown are realized. Fastness properties are determined against light, rubbing and washing. Depending on the application conditions, light fastness values in the range of grade 3.5 to 6 (Xenotest) are realized, which are good values for natural dye applications. The washing and rubbing fastness are quite good for low dye concentrations but decrease if the logwood extract is applied in higher concentration. Altogether it can be stated that with logwood as dye component colored fully bio-based textiles can be realized, which exhibit as well good fastness properties.
