Integrating AI and Climate Risk to Future-Proof Business Models

Climate change is altering the business environment, increasing physical, transition, and liability risks. In response to this, organizations are resorting to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to gain a better understanding of complex climate-related information and take evidence-based action at the right time. The chapter discusses the advantages of AI approaches to climate risk assessment, supporting ESG reporting, and enhancing business resiliency over the long term, e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, and geospatial analytics. Based on the examples in finance, energy, manufacturing, and agriculture, it emphasizes the idea of AI updating the forecasting process, resource utilization, and climate-adaptation strategies. The ethical and governance issues related to the climate-AI systems, such as transparency, consideration of fairness, and equity, are also discussed in the chapter. New concepts like advanced climate modelling and anticipatory governance are discussed to demonstrate how AI will allow making business models more adaptive and sustainable.
