The twilight of Bacon’s epoch requires a reappraisal of the premises and components of his implicit program. Its fundamental tenet—knowledge is power—has not only stood the test of time but continuously and increasingly reaffirmed its unquestionable validity. However, while another premise—mobilizing knowledge to dominate nature through understanding—led to vast improvements in the human condition, their unequal distribution and undesirable consequences became obvious and increasingly ominous. The paradoxical consequences of the unfolding, deployment, and success of the Baconian Program ended up undermining its foundations.
