The author considers the impact of new reporting guidelines from the Council on Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and U.S. News and World Report reframing HBCUs as competitive institutions regarding fundraising and alumni engagement. U.S. News’ elimination of the alumni giving rate metric and CASE’s study on total alumni engagement augurs well for measuring the participation HBCU alumni historically have pursued. U.S. News’ social mobility index further allows HBCUs to be recognized for their unique graduation success among low-income students, and their HBCU comparison tool allows for institutions to demonstrate their comparative successes. These shifts in reporting metrics allow for higher visibility and competitiveness for HBCUs vis-à-vis PWIs and enable institutions to present their successes to donors with the ethos of national organizations.
