Water pollution among all the various environmental pollution is becoming one of the most serious issue in not only developing countries but also in developed countries. Increase in the industrial activities, mining activities, urbanization, globalization and other human activities in recent decades are the main reason for the contamination of water due to release of enormous amount of toxic contaminants in the environment. The major heavy metal pollutants are chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). Consumption/utilization of heavy metal contaminated water resources leads to certain kind of diseases among humans, animals and plants. Various techniques are available to remove these pollutants from the wastewater but phytoremediation based removal techniques has gained enormous attraction in recent years. In this technique, aquatic macrophytes including; Pistia stratiote L., Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms., and Salvinia molesta D. Mitch. etc. can be used for rhizofiltration and phytoextraction of these pollutants and can either removing the pollutants or makes the water bodies less toxic. In the present chapter various aquatic macrophytes, method and new prospectus of phytoremediation of heavy metal from wastewater has been discussed.

In the present chapter various aquatic macrophytes, method and new prospectus of phytoremediation of heavy metal from wastewater has been discussed.
