Real Men Are Not Threatened by Women
摘要
Building on Chapter 2 ’s focus on young men’s engagement with arts-based workshops, this chapter extends the discussion by examining the mixed-gender workshops I conducted with participants at Chancellor College. Part I focuses on the participatory arts-based workshops I conducted with the group, illustrating how creative methodologies enabled them to explore identity, gender norms and sexuality. Part II is about the outreach activities implemented by these participants across ten schools in Zomba, Balaka and Mulanje Districts. Using vignettes from three schools, I explore how a participatory drama Chikomekome cha Nkuyu, Nkati muli Nyerere (All that glitters is not gold), engaged adolescents in critical dialogues regarding gender, peer pressure, safe sex practices and teenage pregnancies. I argue that the inclusion of young women fostered a space for co-exploration and in-depth critique. Crucially, this mixed-gender approach facilitated the self-identification of young men as allies for gender equality—a positive step towards building a more equitable society.
