The Role of Out-of-School Time Programs in STEM Education
摘要
This chapter argues that out-of-school time (OST) programs play a pivotal role in advancing STEM education for K-12 students, particularly those from racially and linguistically marginalized backgrounds. By serving 7.7 million U.S. children, these programs provide hands-on, inquiry-based learning that complements classroom instruction. OST STEM programs help close achievement gaps and expand access to advanced mathematics and computer science. Through experiential and problem-based approaches, they foster STEM skills and essential twenty-first-century competencies. Programs like FIRST LEGO League (FLL) show how structured OST initiatives can bridge classroom and real-world STEM applications, build STEM identity, spark career interests, and address the need for a STEM-literate workforce.
