In the previous chapter we described the linear waves that are supported in quantum fluids. Here we introduce nonlinear waves in the form of solitons, from their idealized mathematical form to how solitons manifest in experimental systems, where dimensionality, inhomogeneity, thermal and quantum effects all modify the behaviour.
