Bibliometric Analysis: Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Adoption in Education Sector

This paper examines the adoption of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in education, by conducting bibliometric analysis. The data comprised 699 articles retrieved from the Scopus and 612 articles from Web of Science database by applying PRISMA framework using keywords such as “Augmented Reality,” “Virtual Reality,” “education,” and “technology adoption”. VOS viewer was used for bibliometric analysis and network diagrams revealed relationships between diverse research themes, marking directions, and areas of interest in the literature. One of the key findings of the study was the emerging trend of interest in varied applications of AR and VR in education. It was also observed, that with the use of AR and VR technologies, transformation of the conventional pedagogy was feasible with interactive and immersive learning experience to fit all learning styles. Although highly promising, there are still several barriers impeding the widespread use of AR and VR in educational settings. It is vital to overcome the barriers to achieve the holistic utilization of the benefits of AR and VR technologies in education. The study provides an understanding on how AR and VR technologies can be integrated into educational frameworks to enhance the learning experiences of the students. The findings of the study will be beneficial to policy makers, educational institution leaders, technology service providers.
