Climate Change and Water Stress in the Middle East: Transforming Conflict into Cooperation
摘要
The Middle East faces a severe water crisis exacerbated by climate change, characterized by increasing temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events. This crisis is further intensified by political instability and military conflicts, making effective water management crucial for regional stability. This article explores the current state of water resources in the Middle East, emphasizing the impacts of climate change on water stress. It highlights the variability in water vulnerability across the region, the challenges posed by transboundary water disputes, and the importance of robust water governance and cooperative frameworks. Additionally, it examines adaptive measures and innovative frameworks such as the Water Diplomacy Framework to transform water from a source of conflict into a catalyst for cooperation. By leveraging scientific knowledge, enhancing water-use efficiency, and investing in resilient infrastructure, the Middle East can address its water crisis and ensure sustainable development.
