This chapter outlines our approach to addressing ethical questions in our day-to-day work as educators using collections of material of human origin. It outlines an ethical framework we developed for managing our collections prompted by considerations arising from combining the collections with digital technology. We consider two principles—dignity and reverence—as well as the more well-known principles of respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, as important in guiding decision making. We demonstrate the framework with three examples of using the collections with technology: virtual microscopy, the use of artificial intelligence, and genetic and genomic technologies. We offer examples to assist others working through ethical problems raised by using collections of materials of human origin.

摘要
