Introducing Professional Ethics in Practice
摘要
This chapter provides the conceptual framing for the collection, including the notions of what constitutes a professional and the different ways that ethics has been conceptualized. The chapter also foregrounds the three overarching themes in the collection. Chapters 2 to 5 provide a valuable commentary on how ethics is discussed (or not) in various technoscientific contexts. Chapters 6 and 7 describe how professionals navigate ethical matters in the face of organizations behaving badly, including whistleblowing. Chapters 8 to 11 are linked by a focus on ethics governance in various forms including regulation, professional oaths, and industry self-regulation. We conclude with some remarks about why this matters in the context of technoscientific futures, referring to Chapter 12 which addresses professional ethics in relation to artificial intelligence technologies.
