Mainstreaming Mangrove as a Nature-Based Solution to Build Resilience for Sustainable Blue Economy in South Asia
摘要
Coastal and marine ecosystems face escalating vulnerability to the repercussions of climate change-induced extreme weather events, demanding immediate measures to ensure their sustainability. This chapter delves into the pivotal role of nature-based solutions (NbS) in fostering a sustainable blue economy, with a specific focus on the integration of mangrove forests as a key NbS. Through an analysis of NbS and blue economy concepts, it illustrates how mangrove ecosystems enhance resilience against extreme climatic events while promoting sustainable economic practices. Furthermore, it advocates for the crucial benefits of mangrove conservation, including bolstering environmental resilience and preserving biodiversity, urging their integration into comprehensive blue economy frameworks. The chapter explores how nature-based solutions, such as mangroves, can be embraced in South Asian littoral states, notably India and Bangladesh, to enhance their blue economy models as holistic approaches. Additionally, it discusses the challenges of implementing NbS, such as limited funding and data deficiencies, exacerbated by conventional valuation methods that often neglect biodiversity and climate impacts. To tackle these obstacles, the chapter proposes policy recommendations aimed at raising awareness, attracting investment, and fostering collaboration across sectors. By emphasizing the potential of NbS in disaster mitigation, climate adaptation, and sustainable development, the study underscores the imperative of recognizing and investing in NbS to fortify national resilience and advance a sustainable blue economy. It underscores the necessity of prioritizing mangrove and other nature-based solutions as integral components of comprehensive strategies for coastal and marine ecosystems protection.
