Since the opening of Panama Canal in 1914, the maritime traffic through this man-made seaway has been changing global trading and enhanced unimaginably the economy of this central American nation. However, increasing climatic uncertainties brought about by global climate change and shifts in the hydrology of the canal zone risk to jeopardize Panama’s economy. This trend is amplified by persistent declines in rain precipitation that are impacting the functionality of its canal and could easily escalate further, affecting the economy of additional countries. This case study wants to shed light on the past and current management practices and economy of this keystone seaway and the effects of shifting weather patterns in the region, due to climate change. An analysis of economic and climatic data, both quantitative and qualitative derived from a systematic review of the literature about this topic. This was directed at discovering adaptive approaches aimed at maintaining the canal’s services to global trade and to Panamanian economy. Our effort was framed by six goals for sustainable development: SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships to achieve the goals), in fulfillment of United Nations’ agenda 2030.

摘要
