Unlocking the Marine Potential: Sustainable Blue Economy for SDG Advancement in the MENA Region
摘要
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is characterized by its abundant coastline and rich marine resources, presenting immense potential for developing a sustainable blue economy. Nonetheless, this potential remains constrained by diverse socioeconomic and environmental challenges. Accordingly, this chapter aims to examine the state of the sustainable blue economy in the MENA region, with a specific focus on three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 1 (No poverty), SDG 2 (Zero hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth). The chapter provides an overview of the current state of the blue economy in the MENA region. It scrutinizes the inherent capacity of the blue economy to alleviate poverty (cf. SDG 1), ensure food security (cf. SDG 2), and facilitate inclusive and sustainable economic growth (cf. SDG 8). Furthermore, the chapter examines the existing initiatives, policies, and best practices implemented by countries in the MENA region to promote a sustainable blue economy. It analyzes the key challenges and opportunities for the region, including policy and regulatory environment, governance mechanisms, technological advancements, and capacity-building efforts. Finally, it provides recommendations for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers to foster the sustainable utilization of marine resources. This chapter endeavors to contribute to advancing knowledge and action in support of a prosperous and sustainable blue economy in the MENA region.
