The awareness about the impact of human action on the environment is constantly rising. With population growth, demands for energy and materials will only increase. However, the dependence on nonrenewable resources will not be able to meet these demands. Therefore, alternatives based on biomass are essential. Cellulose is the main polysaccharide found in the environment, primarily in plants but also in other organisms. Cellulose’s properties make it suitable for applications in several industries, such as medical, pharmaceutical, food, and electronics. Besides, the characteristics of this polysaccharide can be tailored depending on the manufacturing method or further modifications. This chapter will deal with the different aspects of cellulose, from its obtainment and natural properties to its applications and commercial products.

摘要
