In September 1961, I was appointed as a sessional lecturerLecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of AlbertaUniversity of Alberta. Early one Saturday morning, I was asked to fill in for a “no-show” new faculty member who had been assigned to teach second-year calculus and direct a statistics laboratory the next Monday. I was only 21 at the time and had never lectured in a large class. After a stressful first lecture, I quickly learned how to relax and interact with the students. Soon I felt at easeTeaching of teachingTeaching a calculus course at U of A at the university level and realized that this is what I wanted to do as a career, be a university professor.
