A Magical Year in Zürich
摘要
The 1982–83 sabbatical in Zürich was very much a happy family affair. Mary and I learned GermanLearning German for the first time, the children went to a private French school (and learned elementary German too), we hiked scenic mountain trails, skied in the Alps and toured five other countries. A highlight for the children was an overnight train journey from Paris to Florence. We also enjoyed hosting the visits of many family members. As well as developing a new theory for long-period topographic waves inLake Lugano, topographic waves in the Swiss lakes while serving as a visiting professor at ETHZETHZ, sabbatical at, I gave seminars in Italy, France, IsraelIsrael, Germany, and England. This outreach helped me develop a wide scientific network in Europe and beyond, which I still benefit from four decades later.
