My First Academic Home: University of British Columbia
摘要
In September 1967, I became an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. Although my main assignment would be to teach applied mathematics courses for science and engineering students, I looked forward to collaborating with researchers at UBC’s famed Institute of OceanographyInstitute of Oceanography (UBC) since my PhD thesis was on the topic of ocean waves. After joining the UBC faculty, I also learned that there were many faculty members outside of my department who wanted more courses in applied mathematics and statistics for their research. A few years later, this led to the formation of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, in which I became a founding member.
