The Importance of Urban Green Spaces in Sustainable Urban Planning: Analysis of the Urban Green Index in Two Zonal Administrations of Quito (Ecuador)
摘要
Urban green spaces are essential for the quality of life in cities due to their multiple benefits. This study examines the significance of urban green areas in Quito, Ecuador, focusing on the zonal administrations of Calderón and Manuela Sáenz. Quito has undergone urban expansion that has led to a reduction in public green areas, adversely impacting urban living conditions. The Urban Green Index was employed to assess green space availability per capita, revealing significant deficiencies in both zonal administrations. The analysis integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistical data to classify and evaluate green areas based on size, accessibility, and quality. The findings underscore the urgency for comprehensive planning and for developing new green spaces to enhance urban sustainability in Quito. They also highlight the need for policies that ensure the creation and maintenance of accessible, high‑quality green areas.
