Smart healthcare devices are a major paradigm shift in the contemporary medicine in that traditional passive medical systems are converted into smart, related and responsive paradigms. Through a combination of innovative materials, embedded sensors, wireless communication, data analytics, and artificial intelligence, such devices have made it possible to monitor physiological parameters 24/7, provide real-time feedback and customized treatment therapy. This chapter gives an overall overview of smart healthcare devices with special focus to smart implants, wearable systems, prosthetics and orthotics. It talks about how they evolved out of traditional devices, some of the enabling technologies, materials, and fabrication strategies, connectivity via the Internet of Medical Things, and how artificial intelligence can be used to increase functionality and personalization. Regulatory, ethical and social factors related to the security of data, reliability in the long run, accessibility, and trust on the part of patients are taken seriously. Lastly, new trends include adaptive therapies powered by AI, digital twins, and smart biodegradable systems are described as the future trends that will shape the next generation of patient-centered healthcare. The chapter highlights that smart healthcare devices have the potential to transform care delivery, enhance clinical outcomes, and define new models of healthcare delivery.
