The Theoretical Basis of Developmental Criminology
摘要
This chapter draws together some of the critical theories in criminology with specific reference to their relevance in understanding sexually harmful behavior of Indian late adolescents. Drawing on the perspectives of developmental criminology, we explore social learning theory, cognitive maturation, life course criminology, developmental taxonomies, and ecological systems frameworks. A critical analysis of Western-centric models reveals the need for cultural contextualization in the framework of Indian patriarchal systems, collectivist values, and cultural constructs of morality development. The combination of moral disengagement mechanisms and cognitive distortions offers an understanding of the cognitive restructuring processes of antisocial sexual behavior. This chapter contends that to understand sexually harmful behavior in Indian adolescents, it is necessary to synthesize various theoretical approaches to understanding adolescents while taking into account cultural moderators and windows of intervention.
