Introduction
摘要
Georges Bataille, in collaboration with the publisher Albert Skira, produced the first exhaustive survey of the painted cave at Lascaux, boasting 68 color reproductions, and quickly translated into English for an international readership. For a writer known for publishing under aliases and for clandestine distribution, this book marked a notable shift in Bataille’s oeuvre. This chapter introduces us to Lascaux and Georges Bataille, presenting the secondary literature on the topic, and the flaws in the existing analyses. This demonstrates how contested our understanding of human origins is, and explores Bataille’s interest in this uncertainty surrounding the question of human origins.
