The opposite is true, as well: an increased protection of online users’ autonomy and data control can be beneficial for online competition. The following paragraphs delve into the specific provisions of the Digital Markets Act pursuing the goal of strengthening user control over data provided to gatekeepers, including an expansion of the GDPR’s right to portability. Inevitably, the discourse shifts on the risk posed by gatekeeper manipulation of user consent and some initial attempts by the EU Commission of curbing such practices.
