The technological development has had substantial impact on the publicity of land registers, resulting in common access to them via the Internet. Given the wide range of personal data disclosed in land registers, the increase in their publicity poses major challenges to privacy and data protection. Various legal and technical solutions have been adopted in European countries to safeguard personal data contained in land registers. Noteworthy in this regard are, i.a., current plans for an amendment to the rules on online access to land registers existing in Poland. The need for adequate privacy and personal data safeguards in access to land registers refers not only to the national level but also to the European Union efforts for enhancing cross-border accessibility of land information. In this paper, the restrictions on the publicity of land registers introduced in selected European jurisdictions will be examined comparatively in terms of their efficiency as remedies to violations of the rights to privacy and personal data protection. Moreover, the issue will be addressed of possible measures at the European level to prevent the misuses of personal data when interconnecting land registers.
