Structural gender inequalities render women vulnerable in the digital domain, and expose them to increased risks of privacy breaches, rights violations, gender violence and digital harassment. The underrepresentation of women in tech development, design, research, and ICT studies further heightens their digital vulnerability. Even the EU General Data Protection Regulation, which is considered a very protective data protection regulation, falls short in effectively safeguarding women’s data, as it standardizes the data subject as a white and heterosexual man. Against this context, the chapter aims to critically assess the European data protection framework from a gender-sensitive perspective, recognizing women as vulnerable data subjects in the Femtech context, while acknowledging their participatory capacity in creating protective measures based on their own experiences and narratives to build up gender-sensitive remedies on data protection.
