Weapons are embedded in the social, political, and cultural fabric of societies that produce, circulate, and display them. They have historically held a dual status in human societies: tools of violence and instruments of representation. Weaponry serves both practical purposes in warfare and policing, and fulfills a central symbolic role (Otis, 2012). Metzl observes firearms are “powerful symbols shaped by history, politics, geography, economy, media, and culture, as well as by actors” triggering “themes such as protection, danger, safety, identity, race, gender, class, erotics, oppression, or revulsion” (2019, 2). Across cultures and time, weapons are used not only to exercise violence but to signify. Therefore, they become powerful symbols in political discourse, propaganda, and cultural representations of war.
