Rule-Based Bilingual Chatbot for Student Support in Higher Education

Higher education institutions face challenges to answer the frequently asked questions(FAQs) by the students such as admissions, examinations, library services, and campus facilities. Existing systems were demanding more resources and methods to provide assistance to students from various linguistic backgrounds, requiring significant human involvement. To solve these challenges, this paper proposes a Rule-Based Bilingual Chatbot to support students in higher education and which introduces a bilingual chatbot which is handling the student queries in both English and Telugu, with dynamic language switching. This enables the students to easily interact with the proposed Chatbot in either English or Telugu language. When compare with the existing systems, the Chatbot does not require specialized hardware or complex infrastructure. To evaluate its performance, the Chatbot was tested with Admission FAQs and Examination FAQs. Results proved that high accuracy in responding to structured queries, validating the reliability of the proposed approach. By integrating rule-based Chatbot system with bilingual response generation, the system minimizes administrative workload while offering students quick and accurate information. This proposed work shows the importance of rule-based bilingual Chatbot systems to enhance student support in higher education. The proposed Chatbot expands accessibility for students who speak different languages and makes the overall student experience better through a scalable, efficient, and user-friendly channel of communication.
