Traditional organizational concepts of economists (such as developed by Coase) were based on efficiency considerations. New technological developments leading to a decentralized environment are challenging previous approaches and require a new thinking with respect to on-chain governance mechanisms as the practical example of decentralized autonomous organizations is evidencing. Structural rules must be embedded into the programming codes of smart contracts and specific protective regulations are needed to overcome the technological challenges.
