Value-Based Care for Patients with a Pediatric Tibia Toddler Fracture: Less Is More
摘要
Traditional treatment of a toddler fracture is often worse than the injury itself. When it comes to toddler fractures, less is truly more. These injuries are stable and heal well without the need for a cast, brace, or boot. The management of toddler fractures provides a special opportunity to reduce healthcare costs while achieving excellent outcomes. Traditional treatment involves a cast, brace, or boot; multiple follow-up visits; and additional X-rays. Not only is this approach costly, but it also exposes the child to unnecessary radiation and increases the risk of skin pressure injuries. By shifting the focus of treatment to observation, education, and reassurance, clinicians can minimize patient risks, lower costs, maintain excellent outcomes, and improve value. Achieving this shift is enhanced by collaboration among key stakeholders, dissemination of current research, and the development of a clinical guideline.
