Perspectives, Approaches, and Theories of Cultural Identity

There are various perspectives, approaches, and theories about cultural identity. Chapter 4 tries to specify these perspectives, approaches, and theories with regard to L2 teachers’ cultural identity. First, various perspectives about cultural identity, including biological, social structural, poststructural, and sociocultural ones, are discussed regarding L2 teachers’ cultural identity. Second, different approaches to cultural identity, such as social scientific, interpretive, and critical/interpretive ones, are reviewed, and the related theories, including identity management theory, communication theory of identity, identity negotiation theory, cultural contract theory, co-cultural theory, and cultural identity theory, have been critically reviewed. Finally, a critical discussion has been made about what can be understood from the varieties of perspectives, approaches, and theories of cultural identity when L2 teachers are focused.
