Introduction: The Unseen Dimension of L2 Teacher Education: Spotlighting Cultural Identity

With the aim of spotlighting L2 teachers’ cultural identity as a dimension of L2 teacher education programs, Chap. 1 outlines the structure of the book: L2 Teachers’ Cultural Identity: An Introduction to Theory and Practice. Therefore, I have attempted to identify the position of cultural identity in the association existing between L2 teachers and L2 cultures. Chapter 1 highlights how the inseparable relationship between language and culture may push us to think critically about L2 teachers’ cultural identity, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Therefore, Chap. 1 has two parts. In the first part, the argument for underscoring L2 teachers’ cultural identity will be discussed comprehensively; in subsequent chapters, it will be examined through different perspectives. In the second part, concise and precise explanations of each chapter have been provided, outlining the roadmap for the book.
