This chapter examines Gisele Fetterman’s humorous surrogate speech, delivered the evening her husband won the 2022 Democratic primary in Pennsylvania. We argue that her use of comic relief established what Kenneth Burke called “perspective by incongruity.” Further, the use of humor may have inoculated against concerns, questions, and possibly accusations about the seriousness of the candidate’s health situation. We refer to this dual function as “inoculative incongruity.”

摘要

This chapter examines Gisele Fetterman’s humorous surrogate speech, delivered the evening her husband won the 2022 Democratic primary in Pennsylvania. We argue that her use of comic relief established what Kenneth Burke called “perspective by incongruity.” Further, the use of humor may have inoculated against concerns, questions, and possibly accusations about the seriousness of the candidate’s health situation. We refer to this dual function as “inoculative incongruity.”
