Parallel Universes of the Two Koreas Through Comparative Mental Mapping
摘要
This chapter explores the concept of a parallel universe on the Korean Peninsula through mental maps constructed by young North and South Koreans living in South Korea. Based on their sketches and follow-up interviews, the results reveal both the similarities and contrasts between two societies that are isolated from each other and prevented from communicating. North Korean defectors, who have experienced both societies, created mental maps of their homeland that depicted themselves and others gathering in North Korean houses while the mental maps of South Korea centered on mobility and freedom. South Koreans’ perceptions, in contrast, are shaped by education and the media as they have never visited North Korea; they focus on the state’s control of North Korea and on South Korea’s emphasis on reputation and competition. By examining these mental maps this research sheds light on the perceived images of a parallel universe sustained by ongoing geopolitical tensions.
